Brash, loud and inexperienced though she may be, Kath has a feeling that Shirley might be just the ticket! The Fayre is a triumph but when Kath’s old flame comes back on the scene, she’s faced with some tough choices. Will Kath make the right decision?

Summer’s out at Hope Hall

By Pam Rhodes

HOPE HALL thrums with activity under the summer sun. Sea Cadets march in the yard and happy chatter issues from English as a Foreign Language classes while the weekly Food Bank reaches out to those in need.

Kath is determined to honour the origins of Hope Hall, which was founded in memory of those lost during the two world wars. It’s all hands on deck as the centenary celebrations continue, but Kath’s efforts set her on a collision course with Celia Ainsworth, a descendant of the family that donated the land.

Added to this, a mysterious homeless man proves tricky for Sheelagh to identify, and a handsome stranger looks set to lead Kath a merry dance…

Christmas at Hope Hall

By Pam Rhodes

The march towards the end of the year sees Hope Hall once again buzzing with activity. The lead up to the Harvest Festival sees a stray dog causing a nuisance, and tensions rise between two old schoolmates.

The drama only increases as Christmas approaches, and the panto rehearsals featuring the jocular “Can’t Sing Singers” get into full swing. But the hustle and bustle of the drama in the community stems from the deeper personal stories. Loneliness, loss, and hurt impact the lives of many of the local residents. But where there is community, there is friendship, companionship, love, and most of all, hope.

Christmas at Hope Hall is the final book in a delightful trilogy centred on a Victorian church hall, the like of which can be found at the heart of so many towns across England. This wonderful finale to the series (which includes the sound of wedding bells!) is full of friends and neighbours with stories that will have you giggling one minute, and dabbing your eyes the next.

What others are saying about the Hope Hall series:

“A heart-warming story of small town life, beautifully written.”

Jack Sheffield, author of the Teacher series

“In this delightful tale of Kath Sutton and the motley bunch of characters revolving around the community hall she runs, Pam lives shared and burdens carried. Summer’s Out at Hope Hall is one of those novels that helps you hear laughter in the darkness, reminding you that the sun really will rise tomorrow.”

Sheridan Voysey, BBC Radio 2 presenter and author of Reflect with Sheridan

“Written in Pam’s characteristic gentle and humorous manner, Summer’s Out at Hope Hall appears to be just a light-hearted book, but it powerfully demonstrates the strength of community and the importance of faith.”

Debbie Duncan, author of Brave: Showing Courage in All Seasons of Life

God Cares series: A Biblical approach to Children’s Mental Health and Well-being

God Cares

This month, we’re thrilled to publish three new books in the acclaimed God Cares series by Debbie Duncan: When Life is Tough, When Life is Unfair, and When I don’t Give Up.

Our Best Children’s Books About Mental Health

Lion Hudson Best Children's Books about Mental Health that Help Children with their emotions

As many children in the UK go back to school next week after having their world turned upside down yet again with another lock down, how can we help children understand and express how they are feeling? Books that explore children’s emotional and mental health can be a vital way to open a dialogue with children about how they are feeling and to help them feel they are not alone.

That’s why we’re thrilled to publish a series of books covering a variety of topics that are relevant to children today, including grief, anxiety, bullying, and sadness. By providing children with books that discuss a range of emotions they might be feeling, you can encourage children to speak with their parents or carers about their faith and emotions, and help them to find peace during these difficult times.

We hope these books will spark important conversations and help children learn how to understand their mental health and express their emotions.

God Cares series by Debbie Duncan

God Cares Debbie Duncan

Our brand new God Cares series provides a Biblical approach to discussing emotions and behaviour with children to nurture an attitude of wellness. Children at different ages approach things differently in their stages of emotional development, so this series works at two different levels: illustrated Readers aimed at 5-7 year olds and Chapter books aimed at 8+ years. Please note that children progress at different reading abilities and stages of emotional development so the age ranges are only a guide for parents and carers.

The Bible stories are retold reflecting on the emotions and encourages children to discuss and relate this within their situations. Sections at the back provide a reflective space for children and practical advice for parents and carers.

Debbie Duncan, author of Gifted and The Art of Daily Resilience, is a nurse and a teacher, and mother of four children. She has considerable insight into what constitutes resilience and bravery: the ability to cope, to stay on course, to bounce back. In all her books, she considers what is required for physical, mental, and spiritual durability, interweaving biblical teaching, prayers, with personal anecdote and sound advice. This she now applies to her thoughtful God Cares series specifically to support parents and carers raising children.

When Faith Gets Shaken by Patrick Regan OBE and Liza Hoeksma

When Faith Gets Shaken Second Edition Patrick Regan OBE and Liza Hoeksma
When Faith Gets Shaken
Patrick Regan and Liza Hoeksma

What do you do when life falls apart, and it feels as if God has left you? How do you keep going when your faith is rocked to the core? Sometimes things get so hard we’re not sure where God is – or what he’s up to.

For Patrick there was pain, illness, and loss in his family and community. Then a series of excruciating operations took him to the brink physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Writing during his journey of recovery, Patrick explores how we find God in times of suffering. He wrestles with how we can know God’s peace when life is anything but peaceful, what the true nature of courage is, how we allow ourselves the grace to rest when we’re running on empty, and how we can stay fully present in the moment – all so we can ultimately grasp the love of God at a deeper level

John encourages us to engage with Scripture in a new and inspiring way, allowing Jesus to bring the freedom we all need to live our lives authentically.

Frank yet approachable, Stuck in the Mud? is an ideal guide for those wanting to engage in the ups and downs of discipleship.

The Rations Challenge by Claud Fullwood

Food is always a hot topic – Food waste, food banks, food miles, local versus imported. As we all need food, we can’t ignore it.

But as some families struggle without enough food to live on, others are challenged to consider how much they throw away, or how to make the food they have go further.

Which is why Claud Fullwood set herself the challenge of living on World War Two rations for Lent. It opened her eyes not only to issues of hunger and waste, but also to the many ways in which we have the power to fix our groaning food system, make our families stronger and our communities whole again.

The Rations Challenge takes the wisdom of World War Two and looks at how it can help us revolutionise how we live now. By learning the lessons our parents and grandparents lived by in the ’30s and ’40s, we can build a future that works for everyone.

Wholeness by Christy Wimber and Katharine Welby-Roberts

Wholeness by Christy Wimber
Wholeness
Christy Wimber

The world is changing; culture is shifting. Never has safety and security been more desired. What shakes also spills. Pressure spills to the surface. And when struggles become visible, safety becomes more invaluable.

With the world changing so are people’s struggles. In years past what worked in prayer and ministry may not work today, because people’s concerns and experiences of personal difficulties have changed. And just with anything else we should be growing in how we learn and deliver ministry. God wants to bring people into wholeness. And one of the greatest acts of kindness we can do is provide a safe place in order to witness people’s struggles, so that we may love, care for and pray and minister to them more effectively.

Celebrate the Season of Lent

Celebrate the Season of Lent

Today is Ash Wednesday, the start of the reflective season of Lent where we remember the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who withdrew to the wilderness and fasted for 40 days. Lent is a special time of reflection and faith, practiced through prayer and by giving up something that’s challenging.

During these 40 days, how will you observe Lent? Will you give up a particular vice, perhaps those chocolate bars you keep adding to your shopping trolley that never actually make it to the shelf. Or, perhaps you’ll be joining hundreds of people in the Lenten Positive Acts Challenge — participants perform one positive act for each of the days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday. These positive acts can be as small as smiling at someone in the street to donating to a worthy cause.

To help you with your Lenten journey, we’ve compiled a wonderful selection of our much loved devotionals, prayers, and children’s Easter stories!

Happy Browsing!

Stuck in the Mud? Stories of Hope for When You're Stuck

Stuck in the Mud? Stories of Hope for When You’re Stuck by John Prockter

The Art of Daily Resilience by Debbie Duncan

Debbie Duncan knows all too much about the need for resilience. She and her husband Malcolm, and her children, have all had to deal with prolonged ill health, as well as episodes of acute health crisis. Two family members have died. As a pastor’s wife and a working mum she copes with emergencies large and small on a daily basis. So what makes you strong when you have no strength?

Drawing on her personal experience as a nurse and a teacher, Debbie has considerable insight into what constitutes resilience: the ability to cope, to stay on course, to bounce back. In this helpful new book she considers what is required for physical, mental and spiritual durability, interweaving biblical teaching, prayers, with personal anecdote, and sound advice.
