David Self
DAVID SELF was a highly respected author throughout more than two decades of writing on religious and literary topics.
David began his career as a school teacher and subsequently a university lecturer before taking up the post of Producer of RE Programmes for BBC Schools. During his time at the BBC, David was also involved with the radio shows Sunday Half Hour and Thought for the Day, as well as being involved in the production of a number of features and dramas.
In addition to working for the BBC, David chaired over two hundred editions of the religious discussion programme The Big Question for ITV, pioneered multi-faith programming with East Comes West, as well as making a number of documentary films on religious topics for Danish television.
David continued his career as a freelance writer, broadcaster and journalist, writing regularly for publications including The Times Educational Supplement, The Guardian and The Church Times, and occasionally for The New Statesman. A prolific writer of RE textbooks for schools, he was published with Macmillan, SPCK and Heinemann. For Lion, David wrote a number of books including The Lion Encyclopedia of World Religions and The Lion Book of Wisdom Stories.
David passed away in June 2008 and his obituary in the Church Times noted his 'remarkable ability to communicate clearly, effectively and wittily in many diverse contexts and for any age group.'
